Questions
What families ask us
How does admissions work?
Families visit, apply, and the student spends a morning in class. The office calls within three weeks of that morning. The admissions page lists each step.
Can we visit before we apply?
Yes, and we ask you to. A visit day runs every month from October to March: a morning in a classroom and a conversation with the head of school. Students are welcome to come along.
What is a day like?
It opens with a morning meeting and a Latin lesson, then reading, math and a seminar or a project. After lunch there is time outdoors, music or art, and a story before dismissal.
What are Latin and logic for a child of eight?
Latin at eight is chanting word endings, learning roots that turn up in English and translating a short sentence. Logic is a game of questions: what do you mean, how do you know, and what follows? Each is a short daily lesson, not a heap of homework.
What do students read?
A book at a time, in full, with a teacher. Younger children hear fables, verse and myths read aloud; by middle school they read the old and new books that a good conversation can be built on. The reading list on the home page shows each grade.
How big are the classes?
Each grade band is one class, and the size of each is on the programs page. Every teacher knows every student in the room by name.
How does tuition work, and how do we ask about financial aid?
Tuition is set by grade band, and the office gives its figures at a visit. Financial aid is available; the tuition page shows how to apply.
What about lunch, uniform and phones?
Families send lunch. Students wear a plain collared shirt and dark trousers or skirt, with no logos. Phones stay in a basket at the door and are returned at dismissal.
Is there before or after care?
Yes. Before care opens at 7:30 a.m. and after care runs until 5:30 p.m., billed by the month for the days a family uses.
How does the school talk with families?
A conversation before the first day, a short note home each month and a longer meeting twice a year. The head of school answers the office phone when she can.
