A day at school

The shape of a day

The rhythm is the same in every grade, so children know what comes next.

  1. 8:15 a.m.

    Step 1: Morning meeting

Everyone gathers, a poem is said together and the day is named.

  2. 8:45 a.m.

    Step 2: Latin

Chants and words for the younger grades, sentences for the older ones.

  3. 9:30 a.m.

    Step 3: Reading and seminar

Read-alouds in the lower school, a seminar at the long table in the middle school.

  4. 11:15 a.m.

    Step 4: Math

Number facts by heart, then problems worked at the board and on paper.

  5. 12:15 p.m.

Step 5: Lunch and outdoor time

Families send lunch. Children go out in all but the coldest weather, so boots and snow pants are on the list.

  6. 1:15 p.m.

Step 6: Science, art or music

A different one each afternoon, in its own room.

  7. 2:30 p.m.

Step 7: A story, then dismissal

A story is read aloud, and teachers walk each child to the right car at 3:15 p.m.
